The first Anglican church in Lakefield was Christ Church, which was opened on Christmas Day 1854. Christ Church still stands today and is used as a community museum to honour the pioneers who established Lakefield as a thriving community on the Otonabee River. It wasn't long before the congregation outgrew Christ Church and in 1864 the decision was made to build a new church building rather than enlarge Christ Church. The new church, St. John the Baptist, was opened in1866. This was followed by a rectory beside the church, completed in 1875. The Bell Tower and entrance way were added to St. John's in 1884. It wasn't until 1953 that the parish hall was added; up to that time, Christ Church was used for St. John's Sunday school classes. The parish hall was enlarged and renovated in 1989, providing a much larger kitchen in addition to office space, a choir room, and other rooms.

Welcome to St. John the Baptist Church, Lakefield, Ontario. We are a church that values a blend of traditional Anglican liturgy and contemporary forms of Anglican worship. Our mission is: To Know Christ and Make Him Known. As ordinary people who seek the transforming and healing power of Christ in our lives, we strive to become more faithful, joyful, disciples of
Christ. We look for opportunities to make a difference in our community and in the world.
In our worship services, we seek to glorify God with reverence and enthusiasm. We uphold the authority of scripture, the importance of prayer and acknowledge the power of the Holy Spirit. We are eager to share our love of Christ with others in a respectful, encouraging way. Therefore, we welcome those who may be unsure of their faith or who want to learn more about Christ. We invite you to spend some time with us. Come and see!
