Easter Market

On the morning of Saturday April 3, 2010 a wonderful Easter Market was held at our church. This free market provided fresh food from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm to families who pre-registered for this event. Also available was a free café that served coffee along with muffins, tea biscuits, fresh fruit, and cheese. Amazingly, by noon, 64 families from our community had received a hamper of food that they selected from a variety of fresh vegetables and fruit, milk, cheese, yogurt, buns, meat (hams, turkeys, chicken, and beef roasts). The hampers were a blessing to the families receiving them as the rising cost of fresh foods such as produce and dairy products has been difficult for many who are finding it hard in these unsettling financial times.

This event was organized by Lakefield Youth Unlimited in cooperation with St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and  the Lakefield Food Bank.

Guatemala Mission 2010
At 3:30 a.m. on January 30, 2010, with the temperature hovering at -24 degrees Celsius, the fifteen members of the 2010 mission team gathered at St. John’s to load up suitcases of supplies and board the bus to Pearson International Airport.  Our departure represented the culmination of almost 12 months of planning and fund-raising events involving St. John’s, Lakefield Baptist Church and St Paul’s Catholic Church. Having been generously supplied through the enthusiastic support of the churches, Lakefield College School and the local community and having been commissioned and anointed for service, we were all eager to transform all of our efforts into tangible benefits to the Guatemalan people through the Arms of Jesus Children’s Mission.

Foodbank
The Food Bank continues to make food available to those who are in need.  During recent months there have been increased numbers attending the Food Bank. On average in March 2010, the Food Bank gave out 81 bags of food per week.   Parishioners are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the Church and deposit them in the grocery cart at the Regent Street entrance.  Money donations are very welcome.

Come Cook With Us

comecook1-1.jpg

Youth enthusiastically learning to cook . . . proud to serve to others the food they have prepared . . . delighted to eat their own cooking . . . and happy to join their families tucking into a good meal . . .

Sounds like fun?  It is. It’s called Come Cook with Us.  And it’s a new programme at St. John’s.

Piloted in Nov. 2008, Come Cook with Us is free and runs once a week for four weeks.  Sixteen youth (ages 6 – 13) are invited to walk to St. John’s after school, accompanied by adults, enjoy an after school snack, learn some health and safety tips, and divide into groups.  Cooperating together, the youth “cook up a storm!”  Questions such as, “What is garlic?” and “How do you work a food processor?” are answered, while vegetable peelers flick furiously and wooden spoons stir vigorously.  Each group prepares one of three or four dishes and helps to set the tables.
